Young Tennis Players Get a Taste of the U.S. Open

For the Hills West girls tennis program, a recent trip to the U.S. Open was about much more than watching some of the best tennis players in the world.

The Hills West junior varsity and varsity girls tennis teams enjoyed a special day at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, taking in some incredible tennis while also cheering on two familiar faces who were right in the middle of the action.

Sophomore twins Luella and Olivia Ng, both members of the Hills West varsity team, were working at the U.S. Open as ball girls, making the experience even more memorable for their teammates.

Instead of simply sitting in the stands and watching the action, Luella and Olivia had the opportunity to experience the tournament from a completely different perspective.

Being a ball girl at the U.S. Open requires concentration, quick reactions and an understanding of what is happening on the court. For two young tennis players, it also provides a unique opportunity to get an up-close look at the sport at its highest level.

Their Hills West teammates were able to see that experience firsthand as they watched the action and cheered for the twins during their day at the tournament.

For a high school tennis player, attending the U.S. Open is already a memorable experience. Getting to watch world-class players compete at one of tennis' biggest events can provide inspiration that carries back onto the high school courts.

But having two of their own players working at the tournament made the day even more special for the Hills West program.

The trip also served as a reminder of the opportunities that can come from being involved in tennis. For Luella and Olivia, their time as ball girls gave them a chance to be part of one of the sport's biggest events while continuing to build memories away from the high school season.

For their teammates, it was a chance to see two familiar faces playing a small but important role on one of tennis' biggest stages.

It made for a pretty special day at the Open — one that brought the Hills West tennis family together while giving everyone a chance to experience the excitement of the U.S. Open.
