Ward Melville Swimmer Earns National Recognition

Ward Melville student and standout swimmer Brendan Miller was recognized during a recent Board of Education meeting for what has been an incredible year both in and out of the pool.

Kevin Finnerty, Executive Director of Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Athletics, spoke on Miller’s behalf and highlighted the many accomplishments the young swimmer has already achieved.

Miller had a remarkable summer, beginning with a selection by USA Swimming to participate in the highly prestigious Zone Select Camp in Maryland. While there, Miller continued to establish himself among the country’s top young swimmers, finishing as the third-fastest male USA swimmer in the 100-yard backstroke for the Class of 2029.

That opportunity led to an even bigger stage.

Miller was invited to represent the United States at the 22nd Maccabiah Games in Israel, an international competition that brings together Jewish athletes from around the world. Miller made the most of the opportunity, breaking three records while bringing home an impressive collection of medals.

He earned five gold medals, four silver medals and one bronze medal during the games, putting together an international performance that would be impressive for any athlete, let alone a young swimmer just beginning his high school career.

But Miller’s experience in Israel went well beyond the pool.

Following the completion of the games, he spent additional time in Israel immersing himself in Jewish culture and participating in volunteer activities alongside other Israeli swimmers. The experience gave him an opportunity to compete internationally while also learning more about the culture and community around him.

Miller has also been making plenty of noise closer to home.

On the high school swimming front, Miller competed in the state championships during the winter as a freshman. He has already made his mark in the Ward Melville record book, breaking three boys swimming records in the 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle.

And the recognition continues to come in.

Miller was recently named a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American, another honor that recognizes not only his success in the pool but also his accomplishments in the classroom.

For Ward Melville, having a student-athlete achieve this level of success as a freshman is certainly something special. Miller has already competed at the state, national and international levels, and if his freshman year is any indication, there could be plenty more records and medals ahead.

What makes his story even more impressive is that Miller has already shown that his goals extend beyond simply winning races. From representing the United States on an international stage to volunteering and immersing himself in another culture, he has made the most of every opportunity placed in front of him.

For now, the Ward Melville record book has three new entries with Miller’s name on them. If the early stages of his high school career are any indication, that list may not stay at three for very long.
