William Floyd Volleyball Celebrates Seniors with Comeback Victory

Senior Night turned into a memorable evening for the William Floyd girls’ varsity volleyball team as the Colonials celebrated their six seniors and picked up their second victory of the season with a thrilling 3-1 comeback win over Riverhead.

Led by head coach Matthew Van Horne, William Floyd found itself trailing after dropping the opening set, but the Colonials quickly turned things around. They battled back in the second set, earning a 25-21 victory to even the match at one set apiece.

The Colonials then faced another challenge in the third set after falling behind early. Rather than letting the deficit get them down, William Floyd rallied behind an extended serving run from senior Abby Wiesman. The Colonials erased the deficit, took control and eventually claimed the set, 25-22, to move within one set of victory.

William Floyd completed the comeback in the fourth set, once again winning a tightly contested battle by a 25-22 score to secure the 3-1 victory.

Several Colonials made important contributions throughout the match. Senior London Barnes filled the stat sheet with 18 assists, four aces, three kills, three digs and one block. Wiesman also played a major role in the victory, recording 19 assists, four kills and four aces.

Junior Diondra Hooten dominated at the net and from the service line, finishing with 11 blocks, 10 kills and seven aces. Senior Jessica Sambriski added 10 digs, seven assists and two aces to help William Floyd complete the comeback.

Before the match, the Colonials took time to recognize their six seniors during a special Senior Night ceremony. Friends, family members, coaches and teammates gathered to celebrate the players and their contributions to the William Floyd volleyball program.

Each senior received a bouquet of flowers, while teammates also shared speeches recognizing the seniors and the impact they have had on the team.

The six William Floyd seniors honored during the ceremony were London Barnes, Dulce Carvajal, Lexi Demacos, Jessica Sambriski, Mia Simeone and Abby Wiesman.

For the Colonials, the evening provided plenty to celebrate. The team earned its second win of the season, battled back from an early deficit and, most importantly, gave its seniors a memorable Senior Night to share with their teammates, coaches, friends and families.
