President Donald Trump was in Letitia James' crosshairs long before she became New York Attorney General.
During her 2018 campaign, James promised to politically pursue and prosecute President Trump, declaring he "should be charged with obstructing justice" and calling him an "illegitimate president." Her campaign listed protecting New Yorkers from Trump as its top priority, raising questions about whether she had prejudged a potential target before assuming office.
That "ready, fire, aim" prosecutorial philosophy struck again in the explosive "Cornell 7" case alleged gang rape case.
Governor Kathy Hochul appointed James special prosecutor to investigate allegations that seven Cornell University fraternity members sexually assaulted a female student in 2024.
But James had already publicly supported the accuser on social media before receiving the assignment.
“What this young woman has been forced to endure is horrific and unacceptable. I’m holding her in my heart and in my prayers," wrote James on Facebook on September 28th, 2026. One accused student's lawyer petitioned to remove James, while a watchdog organization filed an ethics complaint demanding her recusal.
James also faced federal criminal charges herself in October 2025, when federal prosecutors accused her of bank fraud and making false statements involving a mortgage.
A federal judge dismissed the indictment after ruling that the prosecutor's appointment was unlawful.
The hits continued when James' reelection campaign suffered another awkward moment during an October 8th, 2026 debate on Spectrum News.
Asked to name a former New York Attorney General she admired, James struggled to answer.
After several seconds of silence, moderator Errol Louis prompted her with “Tick tock.”
Republican challenger Saritha Komatireddy interjected:
“She only admires herself.”
James finally responded:
“No, no, no, no, we admire others. I admire all of the past attorney generals because it is a difficult job and you've got to stand up.”
James eventually named former Attorney General Robert Abrams.
Despite these controversies, James has maintained a lengthy and successful political career.
A Brooklyn native and graduate of Lehman College, James earned her law degree from Howard University School of Law.
She began her legal career as a public defender.
James served on the New York City Council from 2004 to 2013 and became New York City Public Advocate in 2014.
Elected Attorney General in 2018, she became the first Black woman elected to statewide office in New York.
She won reelection in 2022.
