New York Blood Center Declares Second Emergency of Summer Amid Critical Shortage
The regional supply has hit its lowest level since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, officials said

The New York Blood Center has declared its second blood emergency alert of the summer, marking an unprecedented development for the organization, which has never previously issued two such alerts in a single season.
The Blood Center said the regional blood supply has fallen to its lowest level since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving only a two-day reserve. Officials attributed the shortage to a combination of extreme heat and the aftermath of recent storms, which disrupted donation schedules and reduced the number of people able to give blood.
The alert is relevant across the Blood Center's regional service area, which includes Long Island. Suffolk County donors are among those being urged to make appointments at local donation sites.
Officials said the Fourth of July holiday weekend contributed to the decline, as blood drives and donation center visits typically drop during holiday periods. Post-storm disruptions compounded the problem by canceling additional donation events.
The Blood Center urged eligible donors to make appointments as soon as possible. Officials said all blood types are needed, with certain types in especially critical demand.
Donors must generally be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in good health to give blood. Those who have recently traveled, had a tattoo or piercing, or take certain medications may face temporary deferrals and should check eligibility guidelines before scheduling.
Information on donation locations and appointments is available through the New York Blood Center's website and hotline.
