Russia Launches Mass Drone and Missile Strike Across Ukraine

Russian forces launched a large overnight barrage of drones and missiles against Ukraine from Friday into Saturday, leaving at least eight people dead and damaging civilian infrastructure from Kharkiv to Kherson. Commercial ships in the Black Sea were also struck, and neighboring Poland scrambled its air force and raised defenses to peak readiness.

Ukraine's Air Force reported tracking 174 drones launched from Russian territory and Russian-occupied Crimea, plus two Zircon antiship missiles fired from Russia's Kursk region. Of the incoming weapons, 141 were intercepted or neutralized by jamming, with confirmed shootdowns in 15 locations and debris falls in nine more areas. The Air Force said neither Zircon missile reached its intended target.

Russia's Defense Ministry said its forces also hit two commercial vessels near the port of Odesa, claiming both were transporting military cargo — an assertion Ukrainian officials did not immediately address. One ship was a Ukrainian dry cargo vessel bound for Odesa; the other was a tanker that had been docked at the port, Russia said.

In the Kharkiv region, Gov. Oleh Syniehubov said strikes on 14 settlements killed five people and wounded 15, with severe damage in Balakliya and Lypkuvativka. In Kherson, Gov. Oleksandr Prokudin said Russian shelling hit 25 communities, killing three residents and wounding five, and damaging apartment buildings, private homes, a cell tower and a gas pipeline. Dnipropetrovsk sustained more than 10 separate Russian attacks involving drones, artillery and aerial bombs, regional officials said, with two people wounded and a clinic, a shopping center and residential neighborhoods damaged.

Poland activated a precautionary military response. The Polish military's Operational Command said it dispatched fighter jets and brought ground-based air defenses and radar to their highest readiness after Russian drone activity was detected near the border. Officials said no Polish airspace violation occurred, and forces later returned to normal posture.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk told parliament on Sept. 17 that intelligence assessments indicate Russia is planning hybrid drone or missile strikes on European countries supporting Ukraine, and that such attacks could be framed as accidental.

Russia's Defense Ministry separately claimed its troops had taken control of more than 5,300 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory since the start of the year, including roughly 670 square kilometers in September, with the fiercest combat on the approaches to Kramatorsk and Sloviansk in Donetsk.

A Ukrainian government analysis found Kyiv is enduring more daily air raid alerts now than at any other point since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022. Locals have described ballistic missile attacks that can leave as few as four minutes between warning and impact.
