Academic excellence and outstanding character earned 76 Center Moriches students a prestigious honor this fall, as the school district celebrated its newest National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society members.

The Center Moriches School District celebrated the academic achievements of 41 high school students inducted into the National Honor Society and 35 eighth graders welcomed into the National Junior Honor Society.

But making the grade wasn't enough. These students had to prove they were leaders inside and outside the classroom.

At Center Moriches High School, inductees were recognized for demonstrating the National Honor Society's four pillars: scholarship, leadership, service and character.

The ceremony featured keynote speaker Katie Ross, who challenged students to embrace the responsibilities and opportunities accompanying their prestigious recognition.

National Honor Society advisor Maggie Romaine organized the celebration and will continue guiding members throughout the school year.

At Center Moriches Middle School, 35 eighth graders earned membership in the National Junior Honor Society after meeting demanding academic and character standards.

Students needed a cumulative average of at least 90 percent to qualify. But strong report cards alone wouldn't seal the deal.

Candidates also had to demonstrate leadership, community service, good character and citizenship through their activities and written recommendations.

The junior honor society recognizes five pillars: scholarship, leadership, service, character and citizenship.

Superintendent Dr. Ricardo Soto praised the students for setting an example their classmates can follow.

“Membership in the National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society is a reflection of hard work, integrity, and a genuine commitment to serving others,” Soto said.

“I congratulate our inductees and thank the families, teachers, and staff who have supported them along the way. These students make our entire community proud.”
