A routine stop in his own tractor turned fatal Tuesday afternoon when a tractor rolled backward and crushed its driver outside a Commack business, Suffolk County Police said.

Fourth Squad detectives are investigating the fatal incident, which occurred at 98 Veterans Memorial Highway.

Police said Abdelmontalab Sati, 62, of Amsterdam, New York, had exited a 2023 International tractor and walked behind the rear of the vehicle when it suddenly rolled backward. The heavy truck struck Sati, pinning his legs beneath it.

Emergency responders found Sati unconscious at 4:42 p.m. Suffolk County Police said detectives are still investigating exactly when the incident occurred. Sati was transported to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities have not released additional details about why the tractor began rolling or whether any mechanical issue or other factor may have contributed to the tragedy.

The crash remains under investigation by Fourth Squad detectives.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information about what happened to contact Fourth Squad detectives at 631-854-8452.

Investigators are working to figure out the sequence of events that caused the tractor to move backward after the driver left the cab of his own tractor
