Library Announces New Chapter for Mastic Beach Branch

A new chapter is beginning for the Mastic Beach branch of the Mastics Moriches Shirley Community Library as officials prepare to transform the facility into a center for educational programs, community activities and expanded learning opportunities.

Library Board of Trustees President Joseph A. Maiorana emphasized that the branch is not closing permanently but transitioning to a new service model designed to better meet community needs while providing a safe, welcoming environment.

"We are not abandoning Mastic Beach," Maiorana said in a letter to residents. "We are changing how we use this building so we can continue serving the community in a safer, more effective way. Our commitment to the Mastic Beach community remains strong."

Under the plan unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees, the branch will continue operating on its recently adopted reduced schedule through December 23. The building will temporarily close December 24 for the transition and reopen March 1, 2027, with a renewed emphasis on library-sponsored programming.

The new format will feature literacy and citizenship classes, educational workshops and other organized activities designed to bring residents together and provide valuable learning experiences. Programs will require advance registration, with security personnel managing building access.

Maiorana explained that the changes follow a careful review of how the branch has been used since opening in January 2023, along with efforts to address safety and security concerns.

Traditional library use has declined nearly 39 percent over the past 27 months, prompting trustees to explore a model that would make more effective use of the facility while maintaining its connection to the community.

Residents will continue to have access to traditional lending services at the library's Shirley and Moriches branches, along with online resources, digital materials and homebound delivery services. Library officials are also exploring additional ways to assist residents who may have difficulty traveling to another branch.

The Mastic Beach facility will continue to serve as an important part of the library system, offering opportunities for education, personal enrichment and community participation, the trustee president stressed.

The branch's current hours are Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. For more information, residents can visit communitylibrary.org or call 631-399-1511.
