Meet Mets, Jets Legends at Family Fun Day
Gooden, Chrebet to greet fans at free Amityville event

Long Island sports fans will have a chance to meet two New York legends when Dwight “Doc” Gooden and Wayne Chrebet headline a free Family Fun Day in Amityville next month.
The AFA Barbara Rabinowitz Education & Resource Center and the Town of Babylon will host the event Saturday, Sept. 19, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the center, 149 Schleigel Blvd.
Gooden and Chrebet will be available for photos and autographs from noon to 2 p.m. Gooden, a New York Mets Hall of Famer and Cy Young Award winner, won World Series championships with both the Mets and Yankees. Chrebet, a member of the New York Jets Ring of Honor, became a fan favorite during his 11 seasons with the team and remains one of the franchise’s leading receivers.
Photos and autographs are available for a $25 donation for one athlete or $40 for both, with proceeds supporting programs for Long Island families impacted by dementia. Admission to Family Fun Day is free.
The celebration will feature activities for all generations, including creative arts, brain games, children’s games, music, dancing, a scavenger hunt, face painting, food, balloon artists, a dunk tank, raffles and ice cream. Free memory screenings will also be offered.
The event marks Grandparents Appreciation Month as well as the first anniversary of the Rabinowitz Center. It provides free dementia-friendly programming for Long Island seniors, including creative arts, music, dance, movement and brain games. It also offers support groups for caregivers and free memory screenings with no minimum age or insurance requirement.
The center is operated by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, a national nonprofit whose mission is to provide support, services and education to individuals, families and caregivers affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, while funding research for better treatments and a cure.
