Suffolk Recovers Nearly $48K in Unclaimed Funds
Comptroller Kennedy says another 150 claims have been submitted to state for review

Suffolk County has recovered nearly $48,000 in unclaimed funds, with another 150 claims pending as officials work to track down money belonging to county taxpayers.
County Comptroller John M. Kennedy Jr. announced that his office successfully recovered $47,841.98 through New York State’s unclaimed funds program.
Unclaimed funds can come from a variety of sources, including old bank accounts, uncashed checks, insurance refunds, utility deposits and stock certificates. When accounts remain dormant for specified periods, the money is eventually turned over to the Office of the New York State Comptroller until it can be claimed by its rightful owner.
“I am committed to safeguarding all taxpayer dollars,” Kennedy said. “My Office has already submitted another 150 claims to New York State for review. I will ensure that all of Suffolk County’s unclaimed funds are pursued and accounted for.”
The recovery is part of the comptroller’s broader effort to identify money owed to Suffolk County and maximize the use of taxpayer funds.
The state maintains an online database allowing individuals, businesses and government entities to search for money being held in their names and submit claims. There is no charge to search for or recover funds through the state program.
Kennedy encouraged residents to contact his office with suggestions on ways the county can better protect or recover taxpayer money.
The Comptroller’s Office can be reached at 631-853-5040 or comptroller@suffolkcountyny.gov.
The office also operates a Fraud Hotline for residents to report suspected fraud, waste or abuse involving county government. Tips can be submitted by calling 631-853-5018 or emailing fraudhotline@suffolkcountyny.gov.
Kennedy said his office will continue pursuing the additional outstanding claims as they undergo review by the state.
