A Ridge man has been sentenced to 20 years to life in prison after being convicted of robbing a Yaphank gas station at gunpoint while on parole for prior felony weapons convictions, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced.
Marion Maupin, 33, was sentenced by Suffolk County Supreme Court Justice Timothy P. Mazzei after a jury found him guilty of first-degree robbery, second-degree robbery, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle.
According to prosecutors, the robbery occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Jan. 24, 2025, when Maupin and co-defendant Raiquan Davis, 28, of Coram, entered a Shell gas station in Yaphank wearing hoodies and masks. Authorities said Davis stood near the entrance as a lookout while Maupin pointed a loaded handgun at the clerk's head, demanded money, and stole cash from the register before the pair fled in a white Cadillac.
Police located the vehicle in Bellport and attempted a traffic stop, but prosecutors said the suspects instead led officers on a pursuit lasting about 15 minutes, reaching speeds of more than 100 mph.
During the chase, investigators said the men abandoned the moving vehicle and threw a loaded firearm into a nearby yard before the Cadillac crashed into a telephone pole in front of a home daycare. Maupin and Davis then fled on foot but were captured in the backyard of the daycare. The discarded firearm was recovered and determined to be loaded and operable.
Tierney said the case highlights concerns about repeat violent offenders being released on parole.
"New York's parole system is broken," Tierney said. "The people of Suffolk County deserve to be protected from repeat violent offenders such as this defendant." Maupin previously served prison sentences for attempted second-degree criminal possession of a weapon following convictions in 2013 and 2019. He was released on parole in January 2023.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Amanda B. Scheier and Kieran R. Rogers of the Major Crime Bureau following an investigation by the Suffolk County Police Department's Sixth Squad, with assistance from the District Attorney's Tech Services Unit and Detective Investigator John Warner.
