Suffolk County commuters have a new public transportation option connecting Riverhead and Hicksville, with express bus service operating along the Long Island Expressway during weekday rush hours.

Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine announced the launch of the Long Island Express, a new Suffolk County Transit route.

The service connects the Riverhead Long Island Rail Road station with the Hicksville Long Island Rail Road station, providing commuters with an alternative to driving.

Morning buses depart from Riverhead and travel westbound to Hicksville, making limited stops along the route and utilizing the Long Island Expressway's high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane.

Afternoon service operates eastbound, departing Hicksville and returning to Riverhead.

"Suffolk County has the most lane miles and most registered drivers out of any county in New York, and we must do all we can to make our roads safer and alleviate congestion all while providing sensible and affordable alternative transit options to our residents," Romaine said.

The fare is $2.25 per trip, the same as the standard Suffolk County Transit bus fare.

Passengers connecting to Long Island Rail Road trains must purchase separate railroad tickets. There are no transfer discounts between Suffolk County Transit and the railroad.

The Long Island Express operates exclusively on weekdays during peak commuting hours. Service will not be available on weekends or holidays.

Passengers can pay their fares using Suffolk County's FastFare mobile ticketing application, which allows riders to purchase tickets electronically.

The new route is part of Suffolk County Transit's public transportation network, which provides bus service throughout the county.

Complete schedules, designated stops and additional route information are available at sctbus.org/Route-HOV.

Residents can also contact Suffolk County Transit at 631-852-5200 for information about fares, schedules and service.
