Thousands Turn Out for Brookhaven Senior Picnic

Thousands of Brookhaven seniors had an opportunity to enjoy food, music and conversation with local elected officials during the Town of Brookhaven’s annual Senior Picnic.

Hosted by Brookhaven Supervisor Dan Panico and the town’s Division of Senior Citizen Affairs, the two-day event was held Sept. 2 and 3 at Longwood Estate in Ridge. The annual gathering typically attracts more than 2,000 residents, including members of more than 20 community senior groups.

Guests were treated to food, refreshments, music and dancing while also having an opportunity to speak directly with elected officials about issues affecting older residents.

Assemblyman Joe DeStefano said the picnic provides an important setting for those conversations.

“A great opportunity for senior residents of Long Island to meet local elected officials, including myself, to discuss various important political issues of concern,” DeStefano said. “Guests were also treated to free refreshments, live music, and additional beneficial services offered by other vendors.”

State Sen. Dean Murray said hearing directly from seniors is an important part of representing the community.

“I truly enjoy spending time with our seniors, hearing their stories, learning from their experiences, and listening to what they need from their lawmakers to continue thriving here in New York,” Murray said.

“Our seniors have given so much to our communities, and they deserve to be heard, respected, and supported,” he added.

Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine said the picnic also gives government officials a chance to learn about residents’ priorities.

“I heard firsthand what matters most to them, and one thing was clear, everyone wants a Suffolk County that is safer, more affordable, and a great place to live for people of every generation,” Romaine said.

The picnic is part of Brookhaven’s senior programming and provides an annual opportunity for older residents from communities throughout the town to gather and socialize.
