President Donald Trump used a visit to Long Island Friday to tout a sharp nationwide decline in violent crime while delivering a broader defense of his administration’s agenda heading into the November midterms.

Speaking before hundreds of law enforcement officers and supporters at the Nassau County Police Academy in Garden City, Trump pointed to newly released FBI figures showing violent crime fell 9.3% in 2025, while the nation’s homicide rate dropped to its lowest level in 75 years.

“We ended the war on police, and we declared a very strong war on crime,” Trump said.

The president contrasted his approach with Democrats, particularly in his native New York.

“We call them Dumb-ocrats now because their policies are so dumb,” Trump said, citing efforts to defund police. “Does that play well in this room?”

Trump also touted his administration’s immigration crackdown and deployment of federal resources to high-crime cities, pointing particularly to Washington, D.C.

“Two years ago, we were in a hellhole, and now we have one of the safest cities,” he said.

The president ranged into economic issues as well, touting his tariff policies and the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, his signature tax package passed last year. Trump highlighted its elimination of federal income taxes on qualifying overtime pay, telling the law-enforcement-heavy crowd that the provision could particularly benefit police officers.

The Long Island stop also carried unmistakable political overtones. Trump won Nassau County in 2024, becoming the first Republican presidential candidate to carry it in more than two decades, and Republicans are targeting two Democratic-held congressional seats there this November.

Trump repeatedly returned to support for law enforcement as a defining theme.

“We stand with hardworking New Yorkers,” he said. “We stand with the great people of law enforcement.”

He closed on an expansive note.

“America is winning again, and America is being respected all over the world,” Trump said. “The Golden Age of America is upon us.”
