The United Coalition of Public Safety has endorsed Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche for Senate approval, citing his commitment to protecting law enforcement officers, combating violent crime and strengthening partnerships between federal and local agencies.

UCOPS President Lou Civello announced the endorsement after a lengthy teleconference with Blanche, during which they discussed issues affecting police officers and other first responders across the country.

“Our members wanted answers on the issues that matter most to the men and women who put their lives on the line every day,” said Civello, who also serves as president of the Suffolk County PBA. “I came away convinced that Todd Blanche understands those concerns and is committed to standing with law enforcement.”

The conversation began with growing concerns over threats and intimidation directed at law enforcement officers, including doxxing and attacks targeting officers and their families.

“He assured me that prosecuting crimes of this nature is a top priority and that he supports strengthening existing laws to act as a deterrent to would-be criminals,” Civello said.

The discussion also turned to the challenges local agencies face in working with federal partners, including the elimination of 287(g) agreements and other policies that officers say have hampered cooperation.

“I asked how we can navigate around these obstacles so we can continue to work effectively with our federal partners,” Civello said. “The Attorney General said he understands the concerns and is committed to finding ways to improve cooperation between federal, state and local law enforcement.”

Civello also raised concerns about the impact of New York’s criminal justice laws.

“We discussed the effects of New York’s bail reform laws and how they have impacted public safety and police officers on the streets,” Civello said. “He agreed that repeat offenders should be held accountable and that violent criminals should not be released back into our communities simply because of failed policies.”

The two also discussed the role law enforcement organizations can play in advancing public safety initiatives.

“He expressed a strong desire to work with organizations like UCOPS and believes that law enforcement organizations have an important role in shaping public policy,” Civello said.

Based on the discussion, UCOPS formally endorsed Blanche for attorney general.

“After speaking with him, I believe Todd Blanche has the leadership, integrity and commitment to make a real difference for law enforcement and the communities we serve,” Civello said. “That’s why the United Coalition of Public Safety is proud to endorse him.”
