Cheer Team Plants Their Flag

The Sachem 14Y cheer team is showing that school spirit and community pride can go hand in hand.

The team recently visited Anthony Piccirillo’s office after holding a special fundraiser called “Flag My Yard” in celebration of America 250.

“Flag My Yard” is a popular community outreach project that gives local middle school, high school and competitive cheer squads an opportunity to place American flags, or custom team flags, in community members’ yards for special occasions such as the Fourth of July, Memorial Day or senior nights.

The projects not only allow teams to spread some patriotism throughout their communities, but also help raise money for important expenses such as team travel, equipment and competition fees.

For the Sachem 14Y cheer team, the fundraiser provided an opportunity to bring that community spirit to local neighborhoods while supporting the young athletes who make up the squad.

Their visit to Piccirillo’s office this week provided an opportunity to recognize the team for its fundraising efforts and the time and energy its members have dedicated to giving back to the community.

Piccirillo praised the young cheerleaders for their efforts and the example they are setting.

“Thank you for your volunteerism and patriotism in our community,” Piccirillo wrote.

For the athletes, “Flag My Yard” was about more than simply raising money. It was a chance for the team to get involved in the community and take part in a celebration that brought families and neighbors together.

Youth sports are often about much more than what happens during practices and competitions. Teams like Sachem 14Y cheer provide young athletes with opportunities to learn teamwork, responsibility and leadership, while community projects give them another way to put those lessons into action.

The “Flag My Yard” fundraiser allowed the cheer team to do just that while celebrating America 250 and giving local residents a chance to proudly display their American flags.

The team’s visit this week was a fitting way to recognize those efforts and highlight the positive impact young athletes can have beyond the playing field.
