The Commack boys soccer team brought its community together for a meaningful night on the field this week, hosting its annual Danny Mihnovich Game against Ward Melville while raising money for the Danny Mihnovich Scholarship.

The special event showed how high school sports can bring people together for a cause that reaches far beyond the scoreboard. With support from his teammates and the Commack community, Jacob W. raised more than $1,800 for the scholarship, helping continue a tradition of honoring Mihnovich through the sport he loved.

The game itself featured a competitive battle between two Suffolk County programs. Commack’s Ryan Curcio found the back of the net, while Evren Ataman scored for Ward Melville. The teams finished regulation and overtime tied at 1-1.

Ward Melville goalkeeper James Wright turned in an impressive performance, making 11 saves, including eight in the second half and two during overtime, to help his team earn the draw.

The result left Commack with a 9-1-1 record in Suffolk II, while Ward Melville moved to 6-4-1.

Although both teams were competing for valuable league points, the evening’s significance extended beyond the result. The annual game gives players, families and supporters an opportunity to remember Danny Mihnovich and contribute to a scholarship that keeps his memory alive.

The more than $1,800 raised by Jacob W. reflected the generosity of the Commack soccer community and the willingness of players and supporters to come together for something meaningful.

High school sports are often measured in goals, wins and standings, but events like the Danny Mihnovich Game offer a reminder of the lasting connections sports can create. The fundraiser gave the players an opportunity to make a difference while representing their school and community.

With the season continuing, Commack will look to build on its strong campaign. This week, however, the community’s effort to honor Mihnovich and support a scholarship in his name was just as important as anything that happened on the field.
