Dreams Become Reality for Two Stony Brook Baseball Stars

The Stony Brook University baseball program reached another milestone this week as two Seawolves officially began their professional baseball journeys following the 2026 MLB Draft in Philadelphia.

Senior left-handed pitcher Micah Worley was selected in the sixth round of the draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the 177th overall pick, while teammate Scott Gell signed with the San Francisco Giants as an undrafted free agent.

Worley becomes the 29th player in program history to be selected in the MLB Draft and the first Stony Brook player drafted since 2019, when Michael Wilson and Nick Grande were selected in the 16th and 17th rounds, respectively. He also joins Wilson as the only two Seawolves ever selected by the Diamondbacks.

The Missouri native enjoyed a standout senior season, earning All-CAA Honorable Mention recognition and establishing himself as one of the top pitchers in the conference. Worley was named CAA Pitcher of the Week in consecutive weeks in April after dominating performances against Hofstra and Monmouth. He struck out 13 batters over 7.2 scoreless innings against Hofstra before following that performance with 10 strikeouts across eight shutout innings against Monmouth.

Worley finished the season second in the CAA with 93 strikeouts, the fifth-highest single-season total in Stony Brook history. He posted a 3.12 ERA, the third-best mark in the conference, while finishing with a 6-5 record over 69.1 innings. During conference play, Worley went 4-4 with a 3.29 ERA and held opposing hitters to a .220 batting average.

Gell also earned an opportunity at the professional level after signing with the Giants, becoming the first Seawolf to join an MLB organization as an undrafted free agent since Joe Meliors signed with the Los Angeles Angels in 2010.

The Connecticut native was a major contributor behind the plate for Stony Brook in 2026, making 38 starts in 44 appearances. He enjoyed a breakout offensive season, setting career highs with 25 runs scored, 40 hits, 10 doubles, three home runs, 35 RBIs, a .303 batting average, and a .377 on-base percentage.

Gell ranked among the team's leaders in several offensive categories, recording 11 multi-hit games and a 10-game hitting streak. Defensively, he also made an impact by throwing out 19 potential base stealers. His efforts earned him CSC Academic All-District honors.

Over three seasons with the Seawolves, Gell appeared in 80 games with 56 starts, finishing his career with a .286 batting average, six home runs, 49 RBIs, 38 runs scored, 14 doubles, and a .371 on-base percentage.

For Stony Brook baseball, seeing two players take the next step represents another proud moment for a program that continues to develop talent capable of reaching the professional ranks.
