Former Heisman Finalist Released

As NFL training camps begin across the country, the Baltimore Ravens made a notable roster move by waiving rookie quarterback Diego Pavia to make room for veteran center Ethan Pocic, who officially signed with the team.

Pavia joined the Ravens as an undrafted free agent in April after a remarkable college career at Vanderbilt. Despite becoming the first Heisman Trophy finalist in 12 years to go undrafted, the talented signal caller was unable to secure a spot on Baltimore's initial training camp roster.

The move leaves the Ravens with four quarterbacks heading into camp. Two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson remains firmly entrenched as the starter, while veterans Tyler Huntley and Skylar Thompson provide experienced depth. Former UConn quarterback Joe Fagnano, who also signed as an undrafted free agent, rounds out the quarterback room.

Pavia enjoyed one of the finest seasons in Vanderbilt football history in 2025. He averaged 334.8 total yards per game, ranking second among all Football Bowl Subdivision players, while leading the Commodores to a 10-3 record, the first double-digit win season in program history.

The 24-year-old threw 29 touchdown passes and added 10 rushing touchdowns during his outstanding campaign. His efforts earned him first-team All-American honors, SEC Offensive Player of the Year recognition, and the prestigious Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, presented annually to the nation's top upperclassman quarterback.

Despite his impressive production, questions during the pre-draft process about his age, 5-foot-10 frame, and decision-making off the field contributed to him going undrafted. Following the Heisman Trophy voting, Pavia also drew attention for a social media post expressing frustration after finishing as the runner-up before later issuing a public apology.

The Ravens' quarterbacks, rookies, and injured veterans reported to training camp on Friday, with the team's first full-squad practice scheduled for next week. While Pavia's time in Baltimore was brief, his college accomplishments suggest another opportunity could come with a different NFL organization in the future.
