The sports world remembers the spectacle of "The Decision," when LeBron James announced he was taking his talents to South Beach. Many fans hoped this week would bring another dramatic reveal, but instead, the NBA superstar left everyone waiting a little longer.
Making his first public appearance since informing the Los Angeles Lakers that he plans to continue his career elsewhere in free agency, James stopped short of announcing his next destination during a live taping of his Mind the Game podcast at Fanatics Fest in New York City.
Even guest co-host Tyrese Haliburton tried to get the answer everyone wanted.
"Is there a decision that still has to be made?" Haliburton asked early in the show.
James smiled but wouldn't take the bait.
"We literally talked about this in the back," James replied. "We're not doing that today."
While no announcement came, James did hint that a decision is getting closer.
"I won't hold you guys up too much longer," he said later during a separate appearance at the CNBC and Boardroom Game Plan Summit.
Since announcing he would leave the Lakers after eight seasons, several teams have reportedly entered the mix. According to reports, the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, and Golden State Warriors are among the franchises pursuing the four-time NBA champion.
James even joked with fans at Fanatics Fest as they shouted out their favorite teams.
"I heard Warriors... I heard Philly... Miami..." James laughed. "This guy just told me to come to the Yankees."
The 41-year-old also emphasized that family will play a major role in his decision. James explained that while his sons are now grown, his 12-year-old daughter remains an important part of the conversation as he decides where to finish his Hall of Fame career.
James also thanked the Lakers organization, owner Jeanie Buss, general manager Rob Pelinka, his coaches and teammates for eight memorable seasons.
For now, the basketball world continues to wait. One thing is certain: wherever LeBron lands, it will instantly become one of the biggest stories in sports.
