The Sachem East girls soccer team has made program history, capturing its first outright Suffolk County Class AAA championship with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over second-seeded Connetquot on Thursday evening.

The Arrows came into the championship matchup knowing they would have their hands full against a talented Connetquot squad, but they rose to the occasion when it mattered most. Sophomore midfielder Hailey Lessuk provided the game's only goal, giving Sachem East the lead it needed to secure the county championship.

The victory marks a major milestone for the program, which last captured a Suffolk County championship in 2007. This year's accomplishment is especially impressive considering the team's youth. Sachem East has just one senior on its roster, making the championship a testament to the talent, determination and teamwork of a group with plenty of soccer ahead of them.

The two teams were certainly familiar with one another heading into Thursday's showdown. Sachem East defeated Connetquot 3-1 in their October 7 regular-season meeting, while Connetquot had also shown its strength throughout the season, including a 3-0 shutout victory over Sachem North earlier in October.

With Thursday's win, Sachem East improves its record to an impressive 14-2-1 and adds a historic county championship to an already outstanding season.

For the Arrows, the celebration may be just getting started. With the Suffolk County title secured, Sachem East now turns its attention to the Long Island championship, where the young squad will have an opportunity to add another memorable chapter to its historic season.
