Sayville's O'Hoppe Begins New Chapter with Texas Rangers

One of Long Island's brightest baseball stars is headed to a new home.

Former Sayville standout Logan O'Hoppe was traded this past week from the Los Angeles Angels to the Texas Rangers, giving the 26-year-old catcher a fresh opportunity with a club battling for postseason contention.

O'Hoppe quickly rose through professional baseball. He made a name for himself with the Angels as one of the game's promising young catchers. Known for his power at the plate and his steady work behind it, he leaves Los Angeles with 57 career home runs and 153 RBIs.

The Rangers acquired O'Hoppe along with right-handed reliever Chase Silseth in the trade. In return, the Angels received minor league infielder Angel Arredondo.

Texas manager Skip Schumaker is excited about what O'Hoppe can bring to the Rangers.

"I think O'Hoppe is going to be really good," Schumaker said. "Hopefully a change of scenery, with some of our guys, can get him to a place where we all think he can get to. It's exciting. He's still young, a controllable catcher. With some injuries we've had on the catching front, I think it helps our depth. I think the front office did a fantastic job of acquiring two really good players."

Despite being just 26 years old, O'Hoppe has already established himself as one of the American League's most durable catchers. Since the start of the 2024 season, his 288 starts behind the plate rank third in the league, trailing only Seattle's Cal Raleigh and the Athletics' Shea Langeliers.

He has also embraced Major League Baseball's Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) challenge system, recording 51 successful challenges, the fourth-most among American League catchers.

For Long Island baseball fans, O'Hoppe's journey continues to be a source of pride. From his standout days at Sayville High School to becoming a Major League regular, he has continued to represent his hometown with determination and professionalism.

Now, with a new uniform and a new opportunity in Texas, O'Hoppe will look to help the Rangers make a playoff push while continuing to establish himself as one of baseball's top young catchers. Long Island will undoubtedly be cheering him on every step of the way.
