For anyone who has competed in high school sports on Long Island, they know the fall season doesn't truly begin when the calendar turns to September. The preparation, dedication, and hard work required to succeed starts months earlier.

Ask any former football player, and they will likely share stories of battling through the intense August heat, early morning workouts, and long practices in pursuit of earning a spot on the field. Those challenging summer days are where teams are built and where championship goals begin to take shape.

That journey officially began this week for student-athletes across Suffolk County, with William Floyd among the schools leading the way. The Colonials announced that registration is now open for junior varsity and varsity sports for the upcoming fall 2026 season.

While summer is often viewed as a time for relaxation, high school athletes understand that success requires commitment long before the first game is played. Time spent training, improving skills, and building chemistry with teammates can make the difference once the season arrives.

For many athletes, that means sacrificing some beach days, pool afternoons, and free time with friends. However, those sacrifices are part of the process and a small price to pay for the opportunity to represent their school and compete at a high level.

The road to fall success is never easy, but the work put in during the summer months often creates the foundation for everything that follows. Across Long Island, athletes are beginning that journey with one goal in mind: being ready when the lights come on.

For William Floyd's future varsity and junior varsity athletes, the countdown to the fall season has officially started. The sweat, dedication, and commitment shown now will help determine the memories created when competition begins.
