The next generation of Smithtown volleyball players is already getting to work, and if the energy at the Smithtown Booster Club Volleyball Camp is any indication, the upcoming season should be an exciting one.

Student-athletes in grades 6 through 12 are spending time at Smithtown High School East sharpening their skills and preparing for another season on the court. The camp is giving young players an opportunity to work on the fundamentals of the game while learning from coaches and gaining valuable experience before the high school season officially gets underway.

Coaches Preston and Sanchez are working with campers throughout the sessions, focusing on some of the most important skills players need to succeed, including serving, passing, bumping and setting.

For younger athletes, camps like this can be an important first step in developing confidence and learning the fundamentals. For returning high school players, it's an opportunity to fine-tune their skills and get ready for the increased competition that comes with a new season.

And the timing couldn't be better.

Tryouts for the upcoming Smithtown volleyball season begin August 24, giving players only a short amount of time to turn what they're learning at camp into results on the court. The regular season will then get underway next month.

For the coaches, the camp is about more than simply preparing players for tryouts. It's also about building the next generation of Smithtown volleyball and creating a strong foundation for the program's future.

With players from sixth grade through high school all getting an opportunity to develop together, the camp is helping create a pipeline of athletes who can continue to contribute to Smithtown volleyball for years to come.

There's still plenty of work to be done before the first serve of the season, but the process has already begun.

The players are putting in the work, the coaches are teaching the fundamentals, and tryouts are right around the corner.

Smithtown volleyball fans won't have to wait much longer to see what this group can do.

If the enthusiasm at camp is any indication, the new season could be one worth watching.
