We are Fading Castillo Tonight
For years, Luis Castillo was one of the most reliable strikeout pitchers in baseball. If you saw his name on the mound, betting the over on his strikeout prop was often the right move.

Those days are over.
The betting market still gives Castillo plenty of respect based on what he used to be, but savvy bettors know this is no longer the same power pitcher. His strikeout numbers have been trending in the wrong direction for several seasons, and this year that decline has become impossible to ignore.
Castillo's strikeout totals have dropped in each of the past three seasons, while his strikeout rate has declined every year over the past four campaigns. This season he sits at a low 2.9%. Simply put, he isn't missing bats the way he once did.
That's why I'm playing Luis Castillo Under 5 Strikeouts tonight.
Recent form only strengthens the case. Castillo hasn't recorded more than four strikeouts in any of his last four starts, and you have to go all the way back to before Memorial Day to find a game in which he reached six strikeouts.
Now he draws one of the worst possible opponents if you're looking to rack up punchouts.
The Tampa Bay Rays simply don't strike out.
They've been the toughest lineup in baseball to fan this season, entering tonight with just 653 team strikeouts. That's more than 20 fewer than any other club in the majors and well over 100 fewer than many league-average offenses. They consistently put the ball in play, shorten at-bats and make opposing pitchers work for every out.
That's a difficult matchup for any strikeout prop, especially one involving a pitcher whose swing-and-miss ability has steadily declined.
This is where bettors can find value. The oddsmakers know Castillo is a recognizable name, and public bettors still associate him with the dominant strikeout pitcher he was a few years ago. That reputation is likely keeping this number higher than it should be.
Sometimes the best bets aren't about predicting a breakout performance—they're about recognizing when perception hasn't caught up with reality.
Tonight, I'm fading the name and backing the numbers.
The play: Luis Castillo Under 5 Strikeouts.
