Center Moriches Teacher Chasing Olympic Dream

We continue to follow the incredible rise of Center Moriches teacher Lauren Harris, and her journey in the world of racewalking has been nothing short of remarkable.

We've featured Harris before as she has steadily climbed the international rankings, and now the 27-year-old educator has an opportunity to pursue the biggest goal of her athletic career—earning a spot in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Harris has quickly become one of the top racewalkers in the United States. Ranked 34th in the world, she holds multiple American records in events ranging from the 5K to the half marathon. With Olympic qualifying events set to begin in December, she is positioning herself as one of the country's top contenders for a place on Team USA.

A former standout at Sachem East High School before continuing her track and field career at Marist University, Harris has successfully transitioned into racewalking, where she has made rapid progress on the international stage.

Her Olympic pursuit gained significant momentum over the past year. Harris finished 27th at the World Championships in Tokyo last September before taking another major step forward with an impressive 13th-place finish at the 2026 World Championships in Brazil. Those performances have solidified her place among the sport's rising stars and kept her Olympic aspirations firmly within reach.

While balancing her career as a teacher in the Center Moriches School District, Harris continues to train and compete at the highest level, proving that dedication and perseverance can lead to extraordinary opportunities.
