From Lost Season to Feel-Good Story

What was once shaping up to be a lost season for Port Jefferson football has turned into one of the feel-good stories of the young high school football season.

After the Port Jefferson football program did not have enough players to field a team, it appeared that the season was over before it could even begin. For the players who had worked throughout the offseason preparing for football, that was a difficult reality to accept.

The situation became even more frustrating when the Port Jefferson players were initially told they could not simply join another school's team.

But they didn't give up.

The players, families and supporters continued to fight for an opportunity to get the kids back onto the field. After a lengthy battle, five Port Jefferson players were ultimately allowed to join Rocky Point at the varsity level, while six more were cleared to participate with the Eagles' JV team.

Following an interim ruling from the New York State Commissioner of Education, Port Jefferson's varsity football players were cleared to join Rocky Point. The combined team was also permitted to participate in the postseason should it qualify.

After all the uncertainty, waiting and hard work, the Port Jefferson players finally got their opportunity.

And they made the most of it.

This past week marked the debut of the new-look Rocky Point Eagles, and the feel-good story became even better when Rocky Point came away with a victory.

The Eagles defeated Eastport-South Manor, 35-14, overcoming a 7-0 deficit after the first quarter.

Rocky Point responded with two touchdowns in the second quarter to take control before adding two more scores in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

Leading the offensive attack was Peyton Reisinger, who delivered a monster performance. Reisinger rushed 15 times for over 150 yards and three touchdowns while also throwing a touchdown pass.

For the Port Jefferson players, simply getting the opportunity to compete again was a victory in itself. But being able to step onto the field, become part of a new team and help Rocky Point earn a win made the moment even more special.

There is still plenty of football ahead, and the combined Eagles now have the opportunity to build something together. They also have the added incentive of knowing that a postseason berth remains possible if they qualify.

The next chapter begins this weekend when Rocky Point hosts Hauppauge.

After a season that once appeared to be lost before it started, Port Jefferson football is back on the field — and the players who fought for that opportunity now have a chance to see just how far this unexpected journey can take them.
