Sachem football is getting ready to celebrate a special piece of its history this fall, and longtime fans will have plenty of reasons to come out to Fred Fusaro Alumni Stadium.

The program has announced that it will honor the 40th anniversary of Sachem's 1986 Suffolk County Championship and Rutgers Trophy during a special celebration on Friday, September 18, at 6 p.m.

The celebration will take place as Sachem North's varsity football team hosts William Floyd at Fred Fusaro Alumni Stadium. While the game itself will feature the current generation of Sachem football players, the night will also provide an opportunity to recognize the athletes, coaches and supporters who helped make the 1986 season one to remember.

Forty years later, the accomplishments of that team remain an important part of the Sachem football tradition. Winning a Suffolk County championship is a tremendous accomplishment under any circumstances, and bringing home the Rutgers Trophy made the 1986 season even more memorable for the Sachem community.

For the players who were part of that championship squad, returning to the field where the program continues to build its tradition should make for a special evening. It will also give current players and younger members of the Sachem community an opportunity to meet and celebrate some of the people who helped establish the program's winning tradition.

And, of course, there will be football.

Sachem North and William Floyd will square off at 6 p.m., giving fans the chance to enjoy a varsity matchup while also taking part in the championship celebration.

Sachem football officials said there will be more fun updates regarding the anniversary celebration and the home opener as the summer progresses.

For Sachem fans, it's a date worth putting on the calendar now. The September 18 game promises to be more than just another night of high school football. It will be a celebration of the past, an opportunity to honor those who helped build the program and a chance for the current Sachem players to continue adding their own chapters to the school's football history.

So mark your calendars, Sachem fans. September 18 should be a night to remember — and a great opportunity to celebrate 40 years of championship pride.
