Suffolk Community Mourns the Loss of James Turner

The Rocky Point community is mourning the loss of James Turner, co-owner of Iron Sanctuary Gym, whose passing has left a tremendous impact on the people who knew him.

You could see just how many lives Turner touched at his funeral. Every available parking space was taken, and the service was packed with family, friends, gym members and members of the community who came together to remember a man who clearly meant so much to so many people.

And that may only begin to tell the story of Turner's impact.

Iron Sanctuary announced Turner's passing in an Instagram post last week, describing him as someone who helped shape both the gym and the community that grew around it. The post also highlighted the close relationships Turner developed with those around him, explaining that he had become part of the Iron Sanctuary family.

Turner's influence extended far beyond the walls of the gym.

The owner of Healthy Meals Direct also shared a heartfelt statement remembering Turner and the energy he brought to the Long Island fitness community.

"James was a force in the Long Island fitness community — driven, energetic, funny, strong, relentless, and always pushing people to be better, stronger, and to do more," the statement read. "He motivated countless people and left behind memories, lessons, laughs, and a level of energy that clearly reached far beyond the walls of a gym."

That impact was evident in the number of people who gathered to say goodbye.

"Some people move through life quietly. Others leave fingerprints everywhere they go. Tonight made it very clear which one James was," the statement continued.

For those who knew Turner through Iron Sanctuary, fitness, business or simply through the Rocky Point community, his loss represents much more than the passing of a gym owner. He was someone who encouraged people to push themselves, believe in themselves and strive to become better versions of who they were.

The Long Island fitness community has lost someone special, but the memories, friendships and lessons Turner left behind will continue to live on through the countless people he influenced.

In the end, perhaps the packed funeral said everything that words couldn't.
